How to become a Driving Instructor (ORDIT Registered Trainer)

Thank you for taking the time to visit our ADI Training page.

The fact that you are looking at this page probably means you are thinking of  a career

Change and training to become a driving instructor.   So why not train with FIVESTAR to become a DSA, ADI  (Driving Standards Agency, Approved Driving Instructor).

At FIVESTAR:    We always give one to one training.  Our trainers recognise this is the most beneficial  way to train & individuals like you tell us it’s what they prefer.

We charge by the hour (pay as you train).  We understand that everyone has not got unlimited funds and do not want to get into debt to pay for their training.  So, unlike most other training establishments that charge £2,000/£3,000 up front you can, if you wish pay us for each lesson individually.

We train at times to suit YOU.  Driving Instructor Training that fits in with your lifestyle, training that fits around your current work, home, social commitments.

And finally, we are ORDIT Registered and give training towards all three parts of the ADI examination.

Entitlement To Registration. (Fit and proper person)

You will only be accepted onto the register if you meet the following criteria:

You hold a full UK or European Union (EU) / European Economic Area (EEA) unrestricted car driving licence.   Note:  Any EU/EEA licence must be exchanged for a GB licence or GB counterpart.  Advice on exchange of foreign licences is available from the DVLA.

You are at least 21 years of age and have had your licence for at least three and a half years.

You have held your licence for a total of at least four out of the past six years prior to entering the register after qualifying.

Applying to become an ADI (Approved Driving Instructor)

You will need to apply to the registrar to register as a Potential Driving Instructor (PDI) and start the qualifying process.

You can do this on line at direct.gov.uk. Or download the application form (AD13) from businesslink.gov.uk.

Criminal Records

You will need to obtain a criminal record disclosure before you apply to register as a PDI. You should apply for your criminal record check by calling the DSA contractor on 0870 850 2455. Or on line at : Apply for CRB check

Responsibilities of an Approved Driving Instructor.

An ADI has a very important role to fulfill; this extends beyond teaching someone to drive a car.

You will be responsible for instilling high standards of driving and behavior into new drivers, many of whom are young and unexpended.  The job is very demanding but can also be extremely rewarding.

As an ADI you will be expected to Demonstrate,

A high regard for all aspects of road safety.

A high standard of driving and instructional ability.

A professional approach to your customers.

A responsible attitude to your pupils and profession.

That your last lesson of the day is of the same high standard of your first.

That you are a fit and proper person.

So you are thinking of becoming a driving instructor….  

You want to be your own boss?  Work the hours you choose, not those set by someone else.  You want to have days off when you want, not be told when by someone else.  You are a good communicator and get on well with people.  You want great job satisfaction and to make a positive difference to peoples lives.

Ignore the ADI training adverts that promises HUGE salaries especially when you are training, as with any self employed position your earnings depend on the hours that you work and your weekly outgoings I.e car, franchise, fuel etc. Train with an ORDIT Registered Trainer.

If you train with FIVESTAR you can usually work with FIVESTAR or we will help you find a position in your local area.  Check to see if we are recruiting in your area.

Our training fees are as follows:

Initial two hour assessment drive £44.00

(includes sign up to our online theory training)

ADI Part 1:  Distance learning course    £250.00

(Included, Online theory & hazard perception tuition, work books & reference book package)

ADI Part 1 examination fee – (Theory test):  £90.00

ADI Part 2 & 3:

Two hour session using the school vehicle £50.00

Two hour session using your own vehicle (If appropriate) £42.00

(You will require approximately 20 hours of tuition for part two,

& a minimum of 40 hours for part three)

Books: (If part one not taken with us)  £90.00

ADI Part 2 examination fee – driving ability:  £111.00

ADI Part 3 examination fee – instructional ability:   £111.00
