News Updates

News Update October 11th 2012   -  DSA online services update

BT has advised that the issues affecting DSA online services won't be fixed until Saturday 13 October.

This means that the practical test booking service won't be available until then, so DSA advises you or your customers to wait until Saturday before trying the online booking service again.

This also applies to the online instructor services.

Urgent cancellations and changes

In the meantime, you or your customers can email urgent cancellations or test changes to customer.services@dsa.gsi.gov.uk.

Theory test bookings remain unaffected.

DSA apologises for any inconvenience this causes.

DSA practical test bookings affected by cable theft

Cable theft at BT is currently affecting DSA's online services.

This means neither you nor your customers will be able to book a practical test online or by phone at the moment.

This also affects the online instructor services, so you won't be able to use those either.

BT expects the problem to be fixed tomorrow (Friday 12 October).

Better testing for better drivers (Published by DSA 23rd January 2012)

From Monday 23 January, the driving theory test will no longer use pre-published questions in a move to stop candidates from learning answers by rote.

Until now all the questions used in the driving theory test have been published. These changes will mean that learner drivers and riders gain a better understanding of driving theory, because they can no longer rely on simply learning which options are correct for individual questions.

Road Safety Minister Mike Penning said:

“By bringing a stop to publication of theory test questions we aim to encourage candidates to prepare by learning each topic area thoroughly rather than just memorising the questions and answers.

“The intention is to improve candidates’ knowledge and understanding of driving theory, so that they are more able to retain and apply it when they are on the road.”

The familiar theory test books and software still offer revision questions for candidates to test themselves and assess their progress. They now also have exercises so learners can practice applying their knowledge on each topic to case studies. There are also new sections of revision support for motorcyclists and a free e-book for car drivers.

The agency has also launched its first iPhone apps for theory test revision, which also help candidates to study and monitor their progress at their convenience as they approach their test date. These are available from the iTunes Store.

DSA books, electronic books and software are available to order or download from TSO at tsoshop.co.uk/dsa and all good bookshops

Shorter version of independent driving video published (Published by DSA 2nd November 2011)

DSA has published a shorter version of the video that explains what independent driving is. It focuses on what candidates have to do during the independent driving section.

The original version explained what the test was like before October 2010. It also included feedback from candidates that took part in the independent driving trials.
